So apparently the internet decided to name this dish Swamp Potatoes… and I’m not mad about it. Honestly, it sounds like something Shrek might serve for Sunday dinner, but don’t let the name fool you. This recipe is pure comfort food—potatoes, sausage, green beans, butter—slow cooked into something way more delicious than its title suggests.
The best part? You barely lift a finger. Just dump everything in the slow cooker, walk away, and let the “swamp” do its thing. By the time it’s done, you’ve got a hearty, Cajun-style meal that’ll have everyone coming back for seconds.

When I first heard the name Swamp Potatoes, I thought… “Do I need hip waders for this recipe?” But no worries, there are no gators or murky waters involved, just good old comfort food that’s been taking over TikTok.
It’s basically the ultimate lazy day meal. You toss potatoes, smoked sausage, green beans, and a stick of butter into the slow cooker, shut the lid, and let the magic happen. Somewhere between hour four and hour six, the house smells like Cajun heaven and you suddenly forget the questionable name. One bite in and you’ll be like me—wondering why we didn’t all start eating Swamp Potatoes years ago.
I’ve got a soft spot for viral recipes. Over the years I’ve cooked plenty of them just to see what all the buzz was about—like Gigi Hadid’s spicy vodka pasta, TikTok’s baked spaghetti, and even the famous TikTok ramen hack. Some of them are one-hit wonders, but a few actually earn a permanent spot in my kitchen.
Now along comes Swamp Potatoes, the latest slow cooker sensation everyone’s talking about. With a name like that, how could I not give it a try?

Ingredients Needed and Possible Substitutions
You can find exact amounts in the recipe card at the end of this post. Here are the things you will need:

- Gold potatoes – I like using gold potatoes because they hold their shape while still getting nice and tender in the slow cooker. Red potatoes work too, and if I use russets, I cut them a little larger so they don’t break down as much.
- Onion – A little diced onion adds flavor right from the bottom of the pot. Yellow, white, or sweet onions all work fine here.
- Smoked sausage – This gives the dish a hearty, smoky flavor. I usually use andouille, but kielbasa, Polska, turkey sausage, chicken sausage, or even a plant-based sausage are all good swaps.
- Olive oil – A drizzle of olive oil helps the seasoning coat everything nicely. Any neutral oil, like canola or vegetable, works if that’s what you have.
- Salt and pepper – Simple but important for rounding out the flavors. Sometimes I add a little cayenne or red pepper flakes if I want extra heat.
- Creole or Cajun seasoning – I use my homemade blend since store-bought ones can be salty. If you don’t have either on hand, you can mix paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, thyme, and cayenne for a quick substitute.
- Green beans – Fresh green beans are my favorite, but frozen work well too. Canned beans are fine, just add them near the end so they don’t get mushy.
- Onion soup mix – This little packet is a quick flavor boost. If I don’t have one handy, I’ll mix beef bouillon powder with dried onion and garlic powder. Ranch seasoning also works here for a totally different flavor twist.
- Garlic powder – A touch of garlic powder rounds out the seasoning. Fresh garlic works too, just chop it finely and toss it in with the onions and potatoes.
- Butter -Yes, it’s a whole stick of butter. Don’t question it—it’s the “swamp magic” that ties everything together.
How to Make Viral Swamp Potatoes
1. Prep the dish: Place the cut potatoes, diced onion, green beans and sausage in your slow cooker. Drizzle with olive oil, then sprinkle in the salt, pepper, Creole or Cajun seasoning and onion soup mix. Give everything a good toss so all of the ingredients are evenly coated. Place the stick of butter on top.

2: Slow cook: Cover the slow cooker with the lid and cook on Low for 6–7 hours or High for 4–5 hours. The potatoes should be tender and the flavors well blended. If you’re home, give it a stir once or twice during cooking to mix everything together, though it isn’t strictly necessary.

3: Stir and serve: Before serving, give everything one last good stir so the potatoes soak up the buttery juices. Serve warm, straight from the slow cooker, with a piece of crusty bread to mop up all that flavor.

Alpana’s Tips
- I always make sure to cut the potatoes into fairly even pieces so they cook at the same rate. Nobody wants half-mushy, half-crunchy potatoes.
- If I’m using canned green beans, I wait until the last 30-40 minutes or so of cooking before tossing them in. That way, they stay tender without turning to mush.
- I like to give everything a stir once or twice while it cooks if I’m home, just to help the flavors mingle. But honestly, it turns out great even if I leave it alone.
- The stick of butter might look like a lot, but trust me, it melts down and gives the dish that rich, silky flavor.
Serving Suggestions
I love these straight from the slow cooker with a piece of crusty bread on the side to soak up all that buttery “swamp juice.” You can also spoon them over rice for a heartier meal, or pair them with a crisp salad if you want something lighter alongside.
Leftovers and Storing
If by some miracle there are leftovers, I keep them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. To reheat, I warm them gently in a skillet with just a splash of water or broth so the potatoes stay moist. I don’t recommend freezing this one, as potatoes tend to change texture after thawing.

So there you have it—Swamp Potatoes. The TikTok recipe that proves you don’t need fancy ingredients or hours in the kitchen to make something ridiculously tasty. It’s hearty, cozy, and just plain fun to say.
And hey, if anyone asks what you’re cooking, just casually answer, “Swamp Potatoes.” Watch their face for that confused look—and then hand them a bowl. Trust me, after one bite, they’ll be too busy eating to question the name!

Crockpot Swamp Potatoes (Viral Recipe)
Swamp Potatoes are the viral TikTok comfort food with sausage, potatoes, green beans, and butter slow-cooked to Cajun perfection. Easy and hearty!
Ingredients
- 3 pounds Yukon gold potatoes, cut into 1.5 inch pieces
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1 pound smoked sausage, sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
- 2 tablespoons Creole or Cajun seasoning (see note)
- 1 pound green beans, cut into 3" pieces
- 1 packet (1 ounce) onion soup mix
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 stick butter
Instructions
- Place the cut potatoes, diced onion, green beans and sausage in your slow cooker. Drizzle with olive oil, then sprinkle in the salt, pepper, Creole or Cajun seasoning and onion soup mix. Give everything a good toss so all of the ingredients are evenly coated. Place the stick of butter on top.
- Cover the slow cooker and let it cook on Low for 6 to 7 hours or High for 4-5 hours, until the potatoes are tender and all the flavors have blended together. Give it a stir a couple of times while it cooks and again before serving.
- Serve immediately with a piece of warm crusty bread.
Notes
- Store-bought Creole or Cajun seasonings usually have a lot more sodium, which can make the dish too salty. I recommend using my homemade Creole seasoning instead, so you have better control over the flavor.
- You can also swap in canned green beans instead of fresh, just add them during the later part of the cooking so they don’t get mushy.
