Well this cabbage and sausage is another great weeknight dinner that saves on the cleanup, and tastes great!
Why You’ll Love This Recipe,
- It’s super easy to make. Just a little quick chopping, then it cooks up in no time. Kind of like a stir fry, minus the soy sauce.
- It’s suitable for a variety of ingredient restricted diets, including keto and gluten-free.
- You can easily customize it by adding different veggies and seasonings. We’ll give you a bunch of ideas later in the post.
- This skillet is very versatile and can be enjoyed a variety of different ways.
- If you’re on a budget, it’s a great way to make use of pocket friendly ingredients while still putting a nutritious dinner on the table.
What is the Best Sausage for this One Skillet Dinner?
We prefer any type of smoked sausage here. Think something like kielbasa or andouille. If you want to keep it healthier, use chicken or turkey smoked sausage.
You can also use other sausage varieties like Italian sausage, however keep in mind that the cooking times will be longer, as smoked sausages are already cooked.
Ingredients
- Cabbage
- Sausage – We’re using kielbasa today.
- Garlic – It wouldn’t be GypsyPlate without it.
- Onion
- Bell pepper – Red and yellow.
- Diced tomatoes – Drained.
- Chicken broth – We like Better than Bouillon.
- Creole seasoning – We always keep around some easy homemade Creole Seasoning. If using store bought, look for a brand with lower sodium content.

Variations
- As mentioned earlier, you can try different types of sausage in this skillet meal.
- Add in different veggies. Try mushrooms, yellow squash or zucchini, or cherry tomatoes.
- Bulk it up more with added chicken or shrimp.
- Try different seasonings in place of the Creole seasoning. Taco Seasoning or Montreal Steak Seasoning would give a different flavor profile.
- Make it spicy by adding chopped jalapenos or your favorite hot sauce.
How to Serve Cabbage and Sausage
We love it just as is. It’s a hearty low carb meal all on its own.
It’s also great over rice or egg noodles. The latter would make it similar to haluski, a popular Polish recipe.
Sometimes we have it in tacos. Yes, really!
