    Blackened Seasoning

Now, let me tell you a little something about Southern food. It packs in some serious flavors, way beyond your basic salt and pepper. That’s why Southern fried chicken is the cream of the crop.

But, today, I’m talking about Blackened Seasoning, which just might be the most flavorful of all. It’s a combination of spices, which are mostly typically used on chicken or seafood, which is then pan seared in butter. It’s so easy, and so good!

We generally don’t keep store bought spice mixtures in our home. When you make them from scratch, not only are they more customizable, but they’re also a lot fresher. Creole Seasoning and Taco Seasoning are staples around here, but we also get exotic sometimes with mixes like Berbere and Shawarma Seasoning.

Today, I am keeping things domestic with my version of Blackened Seasoning. It’s similar to Creole Seasoning, but instead of being used primarily in soups and stews, this spice mix is used for blackening. I will teach you all…

    Ingredients

Paprika – I always use smoked paprika, it really adds some great flavor. In a pinch, you can use regular paprika.
Garlic and onion powder – These add a bit of punch to your seasoning.
Brown sugar – For a little sweetness, as well as to help caramelize everything.
Herbs and seasonings – Black pepper, dried thyme, dried oregano, cayenne pepper

All of the ingredients before mixing them up.

    How to Use Blackening Seasoning

This seasoning is great on fish, chicken or shrimp. Whatever you use it on, I recommend a good squeeze of lime juice before coating with seasoning, For an ultimate feast, try our Blackened Shrimp and Grits.

For most authentic flavors, fry your chosen protein in butter. Coat the chicken or seafood in blackened seasoning, heat some butter up in a skillet, then sear on both sides until desired doneness.

It's just another picture of the final product.
